This misunderstanding, which is costing companies upwards of several billion dollars a year in unnecessary expenses and IT solutions upgrades often results from the inability to separate KM from software. At the heart of KM is the mind and heart of the employee, not the machine. Management teams must first have an understanding of the fundamentals of organizational learning and of the cultural factors that affect organizational knowledge management, before they blindly ‘outsource’ the management of their most precious asset – the sum total of experience and know-how of their employees – to 3rd party vendors.
